As expected by many of us, FUNimation has the license to OAV 3.  Assuming FUNi doesn't come down on A-K, this will be the only place to score fansubs of the series.

As someone who's going to be buying OAV 3, FUNimation scoring the title is good news since I'm not going to watch the dubs.  I've said this repeatedly, but FUNimations "Japanese Subtitles" are usually pretty accurate and include the Japanese honorifics.  The dubs from FUNi tend to be over-domesticated and it is doubtful that they will get the original dub cast.

If they release them promptly and with good subs, I’ll be happy. They also secured GXP months ago, right? If so it does not look like we'll be seeing OVA3 in US shelves for over a year, if not longer.  Crying or Very sad

Also it'd be nice to get the original eng dub back, but I have a feeling FUNimation will dub it like Pioneer did to LMiL2. Remember Washu's line "What up, girlfriends!"?!?! I absolutely despised that dub.

Actually Kiddy Grade doesn't have any domestication in the dub, but everything else they do does... (just shows whoever does ADR on Kiddy Grade is smart and not an idiot).  But um... go FUNimation... they're cooler than other companies like ADV/MBlasters (I still like Bandai the most).

Seems they're trying to make a name for themselves now and doing a pretty decent job at it.

i like bandai's dub casts, they actually put expression into their works, unlike alot of other sub'd anime. it makes me wonder if some of those companies hired people specifficly with telecommunications experience...because they sure never took acting lessons.

I only have two Bandai titles -- "Love Hina" and "Onegai Teacher".  I thought the dub cast on LH was just awful.  In fact, that was what got me to shift to Japanese w/ subs.  I don't recall if I ever saw OT in the dub or not.

Speaking of dubs and steering us back on topic, it is reported that FUNimation will do everything they can to get the original TM!R dub cast back.  For GXP, they say they had a 2-month window to do the voice work, thus the reason they couldn't get the original dub VA's in that time frame (schedule conflicts).  Since the TM!R cast was only needed for episode 17, FUNi didn't worry about it too much.

However, they say they will DELAY the release of OAV 3 if it means getting the entire original VA's back.  If for some reason they can't get a VA, they will attempt to get someone who sounds like the original VA.  So you dub fans appear to be in luck.   Very Happy   With OAV 3 being release into 2005 in Japan, that gives FUNi plenty of time and then some.

Bandai handled Love Hina's us release? my god, that dub sucked. I only watched the first dub ep and felt insulted. I could not believe that they cut out Keitrou's line about seeing 'pink'.  Rolling Eyes I don’t see why they changed it, with all the panty shots the show had, it was obvious that cartoon network was never going to get the broadcast rights and if they did it’d appear on adult swim, where an indirect reference to Naru’s panties would be perfectly fine.

I don't know why any of these companies do what they do.  Back then, Bandai did the translations for the subtitles based on what they felt the American audiences would appreciate, so it got some domestication treatment.  For the dubs, I have no clue what they were thinking other than American's would want it that way.   Rolling Eyes

Gah!  I hate domestication with a passion.  Granted, dubs have to get some changes to match mouth movements to English words.  Also, domestication of some things is unavoidable.  I think to FLCL where the dubs were really good, but they domesticated the script to change a joke to refer to Crystal Pepsi rather than the Japanese soft drink.  In the subs, they left in the Japanese drink.  That I understand since most anime watchers are dub watchers and many of them don't care much about the cultural jokes.

specially ones like tenchi's 'i have legs!' makes no sence, to most. tho i thought it was pretty obvious. no legs = ghost Beatlejuice anyone? somewhat cultural, yet not. Course anyone who watched Spirited Away and then watched the old Tenchi OVAs would have to be a real tool not to figure that one out lol. Or another good example would be to play the Guilty Gear series.

BTW GGXX#R for xbox ROCKS! With the system set to English almost everything is in english, except three character's names. Tho it should be released state side too soon and cheap too. Rumor has it, it'll hit the shelves for only 20bux. oh, sorry got a lil sidetracked lol

FUNi getting the license gets a big thumbsup <insert thumbsup emoticon here> from me.  Like you said, I don't care for the dub, and the sub can't be any worst than what Pioneer USA did.

I hope they keep the credits in Japanese (during the OP/ED) when watching in subs, like they did with GXP.

I believe what Tenchi said is a cultural statement in Japanese.  And yes, no legs = ghost.   Very Happy Of course Tenchi did have his legs blown off when Ryu-oh was destroyed.

Actually, Pioneer did a bad job with Tenchi.  Their translations were full of mistakes.  The one most known is translating "kaachan" (mommy) to "grandma".

In addition to mistakes, they also took liberties with the translations.  A minor example that comes to my mind is Tenchi meeting Sasami.  After she frees him, he looks at her and the critter and says, "How cute" (or I'm told it could be translated to "You're cute").  Sasami-chan then blushes as she looks at the critter.  Why?  Because even though she knows the remark is actually directed at the critter, the remark's unspecific nature means she can also imagine the remark directed at her.   Very Happy   However, Pioneer translated Tenchi's remark as, "That's a cute pet" which changes the nature of the conversation.  Her blushing no longer takes on a personal meaning.

Anyway, those are just a couple of examples off the top of my head.  FUNimation's "Japanese Subtitles" are very accurate and undomesticated.  So FUNi getting the title is a good thing.

As for the dub cast, there were reasons that FUNi couldn't score the dub cast.  They already had a release schedule for GXP and thus had a 2-month window to get all of the original cast.  That's why they said there were schedule conflicts which prevented them getting the original VA's.  Since they were only needed for one episode, FUNi decided to just proceed.  With OAV 3, they've promised that they delay the release of the series in the US if it meant they could get all of the original VA's.

It is at times like these that I'm glad I watch anime in Japanese.  For TM!R, that means no seiyuu changes!  Razz

Rad-tastic.  I did check AnimeNewsNetwork.com, but must've missed it on the main page.  ;___;

I've been thinking, how many volumes will FUNi release?  Let's assume there will be 6 episodes (for now); will they release 3 Vols, with 2 ep.  on each.  Or 2 Vols, with 3 ep.  on each?  I'm just wondering.
